I still stand by the thought that those without slaves fought for the hope that one day they could own one no matter how improbable it might be.P M Prescotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12973205373056561583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32838402.post-63101741485873368612012-08-10T09:21:45.714-06:002012-08-10T09:21:45.714-06:00I loved 1776 and have seen it many times as well. ...I loved 1776 and have seen it many times as well. However, while much of what you said about "Cool, Considerate Men" is true, I disagree with your statement about the poor Confederate soldiers who died protecting slavery that they didn't understand. It's true that very few southerners owned slaves -- less than 20% if I remember correctly. However most southerners viewed the war as one of states' rights. Rutledge's views in 1776 about a foreigner dictating policy to South Carolina were pretty close to the way my own family felt. My family is from north Georgia and were small farmers and sharecroppers. They had no slaves and no interest in slavery. But they did have a strong dislike for people in other states telling them what to do.mlktrouthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09900032424684064965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32838402.post-91599085861451381412012-07-10T16:25:15.486-06:002012-07-10T16:25:15.486-06:00Very kind words, Michael.Very kind words, Michael.P M Prescotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12973205373056561583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32838402.post-64975486894533224062012-07-09T22:30:57.429-06:002012-07-09T22:30:57.429-06:00P M: I remember fondly that the best teachers and ...P M: I remember fondly that the best teachers and professors I ever had used the imagination you write about here in teaching History Class!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16539850495318868267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32838402.post-26852110042948186582012-07-05T10:23:34.645-06:002012-07-05T10:23:34.645-06:00Glad you enjoyed it.Glad you enjoyed it.P M Prescotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12973205373056561583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32838402.post-31546607316553464172012-07-04T23:24:18.305-06:002012-07-04T23:24:18.305-06:00I saw it for the first time earlier today.
